As anime becomes more popular in Western culture, more American networks are picking up and producing adaptations of some of the most beloved and critically acclaimed manga – like Apple TV+’s Drops of God – and few projects are more exciting and anticipated than Adult Swim’s upcoming adaptation of Uzumaki.

Written and illustrated by lorded horror writer Junji Ito, Uzumaki follows a small town in Japan as it is slowly invaded by spirals. While the concept sounds odd, Uzumaki is often regarded as one of the greatest body horror mangas ever written, featuring scenes reminiscent of Cronenberg’s practical effects.

Despite Junji Ito’s critical acclaim, including numerous Eisner Award nominations, adaptations of his works have often been underwhelming, like Netflix’s Junji Ito Maniac: Japanese Tales of the Macabre, which has been reviewed as a watered-down version of Ito’s iconically graphic horror.

Uzumaki hits Adult Swim and the Max streaming app in late 2023; however, no official date has been released yet.
